Home Automation System - OpenHAB 3 - 08. OpenHAB Remote Binding: connected together [Versione in italiano]

by Marco Lamanna

Eighth chapter related to OpenHAB v. 3, the last one for the 2020

In this video I will configure, on my openhab 3 test instance, the remote openhab binding, one of the main new features of this version 3.

The remote openhab binding, as the name suggests, allows you to connect different instance of openhab version 2 and version 3 while version 1 is not compatible. In this way, from an openhab instance it is possible to interact with all the items present in another instance.

From my point of view this is one of the most important new features because it allows you to open your system to different use cases. For example, you can use addons that are currently only present on version 2 while on version 3 they are not yet compatible, or you can run distributed instances of openhab and have a redundant system in case of failures and / or unreachability of one of the servers. Last but not least, for those who find a currently working openhab 2 system, they can decide not to migrate everything to openhab 3 but to use only the new graphic interface and leave the central core on version 2, with a great saving of time.

In the video I perform the remote binding installation testing it with a real example, reading the power consumption data from my current openhab 2 instance.

This video does not pretend to be a tutorial. The hope is that it will help someone.
